Steer Clear and Gaisce - The Presidents Award

The Steer Clear Driver Education programme can now be used to achieve the Gaisce - President's Award. The course will allow students to achieve the Skill Challenge of the Bronze award.

Gaisce - The President's Award

The President's Award is Ireland's very own National Challenge Award, the country's most prestigious and respected individual award programme, and a challenge from the President of Ireland, to Ireland's young people - the nation's future.

How does it work?

There are three different types of award that can be earned - Bronze, Silver and Gold. The minimum age for the bronze award is 15. It is earned over a minimum period of 6 months.

How to earn an award?

There are 4 different activity areas. To earn an award, you must take part in each of the 4 areas. You might decide to build on an activity you've tried in the past. Each participant must participate in at least one new activity to earn an award.

The 4 challenge areas are:

1. Skill 2. Community 3. Physical 4. Adventure

Skill

To complete this challenge, you can follow the Steer Clear Driver Education programme. The main emphasis in this challenge area is your commitment to see it through and how much you improve from start to finish.

You will need to participate over 26 weeks for the Bronze award

Steer Clear can account for all 26 weeks or less depending on the length of time your school or centre take to complete the Steer Clear programme.

If you complete the Steer Clear course in less than 26 weeks then you might fulfil the 26 week requirement by adding some of the following;

  • First Aid Course - This can be completed through the school or centre where available
  • Motor Mechanics Course - This can be completed through the school or centre where available.
  • Steer Clear Driver Education Project - personal project completed and submitted to your school or centre.
